Expat beach town, La Cala de Mijas, Spain

Authors experiences History News Portal Spain Travel

La Cala de Mijas is a favorite among UK expats. It’s a bit smaller than where we stay, but it has all the essentials for a vacation in Spain. The “watchtower” served as the primary emergency communication system in the 1500s, alerting other coastal villages of pirate invasions by lighting a bonfire at the top and relaying the message through 100 other coastal towers. The town boasts a clean, modern feel with a blend of cultures, including Arabic Moorish influences and some artsy vibes. Its easier to get along speaking only English here than some other Costa del Sol towns.
