Be sure your loved ones receive your last words, even when you can’t send them…
A recent news story described the sad story of family members who didn’t know their elderly parents had died, until more than 10 days after their death.
There are easy to use free apps, that will automatically send an email to designated people, if you don’t “check-in” within a designated number of days. The term “dead-man’s switch” is often used to describe the concept of notifying someone automatically after you are dead.
This can be used for various purposes.
- Your last will and testament – obviously
- Reveal Passwords for sensitive accounts, and/or banking information.
- Combination to the family safe
- Travel arrival notifications, for remote hiking or exotic travel situations.
iPhone – LastWords.rip
I decided to try LastWords.rip on my iPhone. It is a simple free app, which has been around for 17 years, and updated about 4 years ago.
You can “check in” to say “I am still alive” using a single click on your iPhone, or using a PC login if you have lost your phone.
Your “last words” message, which can include attachments be sent automatically after a specified number of days.
- In my case I set it to 3 days. The recipient will actually get a “heads up” notification without the message after 2 days, and I will receive a check-in email after 1 day.
Conclusion
It can be slightly annoying having to click on the “I am still alive” button everyday, but perhaps a small price to pay. I observed a few other apps that monitored your cell phone activity to determine if you are still alive, but I didn’t test them.
