Spanish Castle in Fuengirola

Authors experiences History Spain Travel

This old Castle (el Castillo Sohail) dates back to before 1000 CE is located in Fuengirola, which is the town we are snow-birding in for a few months. Its not as fancy as some of the other castles in Spain, because the ruins are older, but the protective walls are impressive to picture in an defensive situation. The interior ruins are only half height foundations, and large flat open area, with access to walk along the top wall of the rampart. The foundations are there for the guard quarters, a water well, stables, and church. You may hear the parakeets squawking in the nests of the large pine trees. A large annual music festival called Mare Nostrum is a popular use of the castle grounds for the 200,000 guests!
